The U.S. Embassy in Santo Domingo has announced it will close on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, due to Tropical Storm Melissa. All consular services and appointments scheduled for that day are canceled. U.S. citizens in need of assistance are advised to call 809-567-7775.
Individuals with visa, passport, or other consular service appointments will receive an email with instructions on how to reschedule.
The Dominican Republic’s Emergency Operations Center (COE) has issued a red alert for several provinces, including Santo Domingo, Distrito Nacional, San Cristobal, Peravia, San Jose de Ocoa, Azua, San Juan, Barahona, and Pedernales, as Tropical Storm Melissa is expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds to parts of the country. Additional provinces are under yellow and green alerts.
The embassy recommends staying informed about weather and road conditions through sources such as the National Hurricane Center at https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ and the COE at http://www.coe.gob.do/ or its mobile app “alertaCOE.”
Safety recommendations include checking emails for consular appointment updates, avoiding floodwaters and bridges, moving to higher ground if necessary, and following local authorities’ instructions. U.S. citizens are encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program at https://step.state.gov/ for emergency updates and review emergency preparedness information at Ready.gov.
