A 30-day State of Emergency has been declared by the Government of Peru for the Province of Metropolitan Lima and the Province of Callao, starting October 22, 2025. The measure aims to address concerns about increasing insecurity in these areas.

During the State of Emergency, the Peruvian Armed Forces may assist the Peruvian National Police (PNP). The PNP has the authority to restrict movement and assembly as part of the emergency measures.

The U.S. Embassy in Lima has issued a security alert to inform U.S. citizens in Peru about the situation. The alert states: "Be aware that security forces may request identification documents (i.e., passport, Peruvian ID), and under Peruvian law all individuals must comply with such requests. U.S. citizens throughout Peru are reminded to exercise caution and maintain situational awareness to reduce your chances of becoming a victim of crime."

The Embassy has advised U.S. citizens to take several precautions, including being aware of their surroundings, avoiding crowds, keeping a low profile, and following instructions from local officials. Other recommendations include staying alert in locations frequented by tourists, being vigilant when visiting banks or ATMs, not displaying signs of wealth, and not physically resisting robbery attempts.

For further information and updates, U.S. citizens are encouraged to visit the Embassy’s website at https://pe.usembassy.gov/. Contact details for the U.S. Embassy in Lima and the U.S. Consular Agency in Cusco are also provided in the alert.

The U.S. Department of State has recently updated its Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), and citizens are advised to re-enroll at step.state.gov to continue receiving alerts.
