Severe weather is forecast for southern and central New Zealand on Thursday, October 23, according to the U.S. Mission New Zealand, citing the country's MetService. The weather agency predicts damaging gales and heavy rain that could lead to widespread damage, including impacts on powerlines and roofs. The hazardous conditions are expected to create dangerous driving situations and disrupt transport and power supplies.
MetService has issued a Red Wind Warning for the Wellington area and southern Wairarapa, Christchurch and Canterbury Plains, and the Canterbury High Country. Residents in these areas are urged to take precautions.
The U.S. Mission New Zealand advises: "Monitor local news and weather stations for updates. Monitor public weather alerts for your area on https://www.metservice.com/warnings/home. Stay indoors or seek sturdy shelter away from trees. Gather needed supplies, including food, water, medications, etc. Avoid travel but, if necessary, drive cautiously. Carry an emergency preparedness kit in your vehicle. Be ready for power and communication outages."
