Viraj LeBailly has taken on the role of Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Stockholm. LeBailly is a member of the Senior Foreign Service and previously served as Acting Deputy Chief of Mission from 2024 to 2025. Before her current assignment, she was Minister Counselor for Public Diplomacy in Ankara, Turkiye, between 2022 and 2024.
Her experience includes several roles in Washington, such as Senior Advisor in the State Department’s Bureau of Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs, where she worked on global public diplomacy modernization. She has also been Deputy Director of the Political Training Division at the National Foreign Affairs Training Center and Senior Sri Lanka and Maldives Desk Officer.
LeBailly’s overseas assignments have included positions as Public Affairs Officer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Dhaka, Bangladesh. She has also served at U.S. embassies in Nairobi, Maputo, and New Delhi. LeBailly holds degrees in International Relations from Yale University and Trinity College in Connecticut.
She is married to another U.S. diplomat and is a mother of two children.
