Local political leaders in Harare have announced plans for protests on October 17, 2025, at Africa Unity Square in the city’s Central Business District. The U.S. Embassy in Zimbabwe has issued a demonstration alert, warning that while organizers have called for peaceful demonstrations, there is potential for confrontations between protesters and security forces.

The embassy noted that the Zimbabwe Republic Police are expected to increase their presence and set up checkpoints around the Central Business District and on major routes into and out of Harare.

In its statement, the embassy advised: "Avoid the Central Business District (CBD) and other areas where protesters or large groups may gather. Be aware of your surroundings. Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests. Monitor local media for updates. Review the Traveler’s Checklist."

Travelers and residents were also encouraged to review country-specific information available online and consider enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive alerts and facilitate emergency assistance from consular staff.

Contact details for both the U.S. Embassy in Harare and the State Department’s Consular Affairs office were provided for those seeking assistance.
