The Bolivian government will implement several restrictions on Sunday, October 19, 2025, in connection with the national elections. These measures will apply to all residents and visitors, including U.S. citizens.

The restrictions include a ban on the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages from midnight on Friday, October 17, until midnight on Monday, October 20. Unauthorized vehicles will not be allowed to circulate on election day. Public transportation services such as the Teleferico in La Paz will be suspended, and public gatherings are prohibited.

Domestic flights within Bolivia will not operate on election day, though international flights are expected to continue as usual. U.S. citizens arriving in Bolivia on that day are advised to check with airlines or airport officials for available ground transportation options.

The U.S. Embassy in La Paz has advised its personnel to avoid both work-related and personal travel within Bolivia during the week following the election.

The Embassy has provided the following guidance: "Register in STEP and encourage others to do the same to receive information that the U.S. Embassy in La Paz is sharing with the U.S. citizen community in Bolivia. Avoid any areas of demonstrations and roadblocks. Exercise caution in the vicinity of large gatherings or demonstrations. Ensure an adequate supply of food, water, fuel, and any medications for the duration of your trip. Check with airlines or airport officials for ground transportation options if arriving on an international flight to Bolivia on election day. Monitor local media for updates. Obey Bolivian election day restrictions. Have evacuation plans that do not rely on U.S. Government assistance."

The Embassy also provided contact information for U.S. citizens who may need assistance.

U.S. citizens are encouraged to stay informed by monitoring local media and registering with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive security updates from the Embassy.
