Sun Life Financial Inc. has become the first Canadian insurer to receive Bronze certification in the Partnership Accreditation in Indigenous Relations (PAIR) program, awarded by the Canadian Council for Indigenous Business (CCIB). The PAIR program assesses companies on leadership commitments, employment of Indigenous people, economic prosperity for Indigenous communities, and community relationships.
Jessica Tan, Executive Vice-President and President of Sun Life Canada, commented on the achievement: "At Sun Life, we are honoured to receive this recognition and are committed to ongoing reconciliation. It's vital for the wellbeing, prosperity, and resilience of Indigenous communities," said Tan. "Achieving CCIB Bronze certification is a significant milestone that reflects our dedication to Indigenous relations and economic reconciliation. However, it also serves as a reminder of the important work that still lies ahead."
Sun Life's involvement with PAIR has led to several initiatives in its Canadian operations. These include adopting a collaborative approach summarized by the principle "Nothing without you, about you," establishing an executive steering committee focused on Indigenous relations, and providing cultural awareness training called 4 Seasons of Reconciliation to more than 12,000 employees—over 97% have completed it.
The company has also introduced the Dean Connor Sun Life Inclusion Scholarship for Black and Indigenous students in Canada. This program awards up to 20 scholarships valued at $5,000 each along with internship opportunities.
Additionally, Sun Life partnered with TWCC Contact Centre Services Limited (TCCS), an Indigenous-owned business based in Winnipeg. This partnership supports national contact centre services under the Canadian Dental Care Plan and has created over 125 jobs in Manitoba.
Looking forward, Sun Life plans to strengthen its engagement with Indigenous partners and pursue higher levels of PAIR certification. The company states it will continue working closely with Indigenous Peoples to ensure its efforts are meaningful and aligned with community needs across Canada.
Sun Life operates internationally across multiple markets including North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific regions such as Hong Kong and Singapore, as well as Australia and Bermuda. As of June 30, 2025, it managed assets totaling $1.54 trillion.
