Siemens has introduced the Sinamics S220 drive system, a new product designed to address the evolving requirements of digital transformation in industrial environments. The Sinamics S220 was developed to generate high-quality field data, supporting new business models in the context of Industry 4.0. According to Siemens, the drive system uses high-frequency data transmission through the X128 interface to enable predictive maintenance.
The company has integrated the new drive into the TIA Portal and made it compatible with virtual commissioning via DriveSim Designer, which Siemens says will improve engineering workflows. New features include assistants and an undo function to facilitate operation. Siemens also offers the Smart Drive Interface as a compact panel (SDI S220) directly on the CU320-3 or as a remote version (SDI Pro) with a larger display and web server. An optional Smart WiFi adapter is available for flexible remote access.
The Sinamics S220 drive system is designed to be flexible and scalable for a wide range of industrial applications. At launch, it is available with air-cooled motor modules in booksize and chassis designs, supporting a voltage range from 3AC 380 to 480 V. The rated current spans from 3 A (1.1 kW) up to 1,518 A (900 kW), and this can be further expanded to 6,984 kW through parallel connection of up to eight units. For power supply, regenerative active infeeds are offered with capacities ranging from 210 kW to 921 kW, also scalable via parallel connection. Air-cooled universal modules can be used flexibly as motor modules or active line modules. Six devices cover the full range of functions and performance for spare parts cases, allowing for quick adaptation to changing requirements.
In terms of safety and cybersecurity, Siemens reports that the Sinamics S220 sets new standards with software version 6.6. The new safety architecture reduces the safety cycle from 12 ms to 4 ms, enabling faster responses and increased productivity. Automatic background tests allow uninterrupted operation, and offline parameterizable safety functions simplify engineering processes. The drive is SIL 3 certified for all operating states and provides certified safety for critical applications. The development process followed the IEC 62443-4-1 standard and was independently certified by TÜV SÜD. Security features include user and access control, encrypted drive data, and integrity and authentication checks for firmware and configuration data.
Siemens also emphasizes sustainability with the Sinamics S220. The compact design saves space and uses resource-saving materials. High reparability and recyclability are intended to reduce environmental impact. Industrial Edge applications support monitoring and visualization of energy consumption and CO₂ emissions. Siemens notes that the product’s environmental performance over its lifecycle is documented by an ISO 14021 certified Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), which demonstrates the company’s commitment to sustainable industrial solutions.
"With Sinamics S220, Siemens presents a drive system that combines sustainability and performance. Its compact design saves space while resource-saving materials and high reparability and recyclability contribute to reducing carbon impact. Industrial Edge applications enable the capture and visualization of energy consumption and CO₂ emissions. The ISO 14021 certified Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) documents its environmental performance over the entire lifecycle, underscoring Siemens’ commitment to sustainable industrial solutions."
