An explosion occurred near Mall del Sol in Guayaquil on October 14, 2025, according to a statement from the U.S. Consulate General in Guayaquil. The incident took place across from the Sheraton Hotel and close to the Guayaquil Airport.

The Consulate reported, "The U.S. Consulate General in Guayaquil is aware of a confirmed car bomb explosion near Mall del Sol, across from the Sheraton Hotel, in central Guayaquil. Local authorities are investigating reports of an additional suspected device in the vicinity."

Authorities have secured the area and closed the airport perimeter to all but authorized personnel. Vehicular access to the airport is currently restricted and all vehicles are subject to full security screening. Travelers are advised to expect traffic disruptions, delays, and a heightened police presence near the airport and surrounding areas.
