Meta has announced an expansion of its AI-powered translation feature for Reels, adding Hindi and Portuguese to the existing support for English and Spanish. This move aims to make it easier for users on Facebook and Instagram to watch and understand reels from creators around the world, regardless of the original language.
The company first introduced translations with Meta AI in 2024. In August, access was extended to allow bidirectional translations between English and Spanish for creators on both platforms. The latest update brings Hindi and Portuguese into the mix, covering some of the largest markets for Reels globally.
"Many creators want to reach global audiences, and their feedback helped shape our work on translation features. With Meta AI, creators can now seamlessly translate and dub reels, breaking down language barriers so they can share their work with more viewers worldwide. With multi-lingual translations between English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Hindi, creators can now share their content across some of the largest Reels markets on both Instagram and Facebook," the company stated.
The translation service is free for eligible users: Facebook creators with at least 1,000 followers and all public Instagram accounts in countries where Meta AI is available can use it.
Meta AI not only translates but also mimics a creator’s voice sound and tone in the translated version. An optional lip syncing feature aligns translated audio with mouth movements to create a natural viewing experience.
Users have control over their viewing preferences. Translated reels are labeled as "Translated with Meta AI," allowing viewers to identify when content has been translated. Options are available to turn translations on or off or revert to the original language through settings.
Meta said that expanding translation capabilities is part of its ongoing effort to connect people globally by making content more accessible across languages.
