Research officer and data scientist Timothy Osborne, who works at the Swansea University Medical School, has received a doctoral fellowship award from the Health and Care Research Wales Faculty. Osborne will focus his research on patterns in how medicines are prescribed, aiming to identify which groups are most at risk of harm from medications and what factors influence medication safety.

His project will use secure anonymised health data from across Wales, sourced from the SAIL Databank located at Swansea University. The results of this research are expected to inform safer prescribing practices and support policies aimed at reducing health inequalities.

Osborne, who holds both a BSc and MSc in mathematics from Swansea University, is among 14 individuals selected for a personal award by Health and Care Research Wales Faculty.

He stated: “I am delighted to have been awarded the doctoral fellowship. It gives me the opportunity to pursue a PhD while continuing my research into the safer use of medicines.

“This support will allow me to undertake specialist training and work with an excellent supervisory team to develop my skills as an independent researcher, while also collaborating closely with clinicians, policymakers, and the public to ensure my findings have real-world impact.”

Michael Bowdery, Head of Programmes at Health and Care Research Wales, commented: “Their diverse and compelling proposals reflect the strength of research talent across Wales and these awards will support their continued development and contribution to their chosen fields.”
