The U.S. Embassy in San Salvador has issued a weather alert following updated warnings from El Salvador’s Civil Protection Agency about severe weather conditions across the country.
According to the agency, an orange alert is now in effect for the coastal strip, covering 13 municipalities, due to increased risk of dangerous weather. The rest of El Salvador has been placed under a yellow alert as a result of a low-pressure system near the Pacific Ocean. Authorities warn there is a high likelihood of urban flooding, landslides, overflowing rivers, and falling trees and rocks.
The embassy advises people to stay informed through local updates from El Salvador’s Civil Protection and Ministry of Environment via their official websites and social media channels (@PROCIVILSV and @MedioAmbienteSV). They also recommend monitoring local news sources for further developments.
During flooding events, individuals are urged to seek secure shelter and avoid driving through standing water regardless of its depth. Preparing an emergency supply kit is also advised.
For emergencies, residents can contact El Salvador’s emergency line by dialing 911 or reach the U.S. Embassy in San Salvador at 503-2501-2999, which operates a 24-hour phone line. Additional assistance is available through the State Department – Consular Affairs at 888-407-4747 or 202-501-4444.
The embassy encourages U.S. citizens in El Salvador to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive updates and to follow the embassy on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter).
