The European Union has introduced a new Entry/Exit System (EES) that will affect most foreign visitors, including U.S. citizens traveling to Portugal. Starting October 12, 2025, most American travelers visiting Portugal for short stays will have their biometric data—such as fingerprints and facial images—digitally collected at border checkpoints when entering and leaving the country.
The EES is being implemented gradually over a six-month period. The system aims to improve border management by tracking entry and exit records of non-EU nationals visiting EU countries. More details about the EES can be found on the official European Union website at https://travel-europe.europa.eu/en/ees.
