An unplanned transportation strike disrupted traffic in Lima and Callao on October 6, 2025. The U.S. Embassy in Lima issued an alert to American citizens regarding the situation, which involved around 50 buses from different companies protesting recent incidents of extortion and violence against public transportation drivers.

The strike led to blockages in several key areas. In central Lima, disruptions were reported on the Panamericana Highway near Estadio Alberto Gallardo, Óvalo Zárate, and Óvalo Habich. Surquillo experienced interruptions at Óvalo Higuereta and along Avenida Angamos. In San Isidro and Miraflores, heavy traffic was anticipated on Avenida Primavera, Avenida Angamos, and the Panamericana Highway. The embassy advised travelers to consider alternative routes such as Javier Prado for faster transit.

According to the alert, "These events are not authorized by the government and may be accompanied by unplanned gatherings or demonstrations, particularly in central Lima. Additional demonstrations could occur with little notice, leading to further disruptions to public transportation, restricted movement, and road closures."

The embassy also provided safety guidance: "U.S. citizens are strongly advised to avoid areas where demonstrations are known to occur and to leave any area where crowds or protests develop. Demonstrations can escalate into violence, and heavy traffic conditions and heightened security presence should be expected."

Recommendations included avoiding demonstration areas, large crowds, public gatherings, and roadblocks; exercising caution near large gatherings or protests; remaining vigilant when using public transportation; following instructions from Peruvian authorities; and monitoring local media for updates.

Contact information for both the U.S. Embassy in Lima and the U.S. Consular Agency in Cusco was provided for those seeking assistance.

On September 16, 2024, the Department of State launched a new version of the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), urging travelers who wish to continue receiving alerts to re-enroll at step.state.gov.
