The International Monetary Fund (IMF) Executive Board has approved the appointment of Dan Katz as First Deputy Managing Director, effective October 6, 2025. The proposal for his appointment was made by IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva on September 19.

“At a time of significant transformations in the global economy, I am very pleased that the IMF’s Executive Board has approved Mr. Katz’s appointment,” said Ms. Georgieva. “I warmly welcome him to the Fund team and look forward to working closely together. The IMF will benefit from his outstanding expertise in economic policy and international relations, as well as the incisive thinking and leadership he will bring to tackling complex challenges.”

Mr. Katz responded to his appointment by saying: “I am deeply humbled by the Executive Board’s confidence in my appointment. The IMF plays an indispensable role at the heart of the international monetary system, and I very much look forward to helping lead the Fund, working closely with staff, and serving the membership.”

Before joining the IMF, Mr. Katz served as Chief of Staff at the United States Department of the Treasury where he advised Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on domestic and international matters. In this capacity, he contributed to developing U.S.-Ukraine economic partnerships and participated in negotiations on various regional and bilateral economic issues.

Katz's prior roles at Treasury included Senior Advisor to the Under Secretary for International Affairs, Counselor to the Assistant Secretary for International Markets, and policy advisor in the Office of Terrorism and Financial Intelligence. He also represented the United States at international organizations such as the Financial Stability Board.

In addition to his government service, Mr. Katz worked as a senior fellow at a think tank focusing on central banking and international economics, spent time at a global macro hedge fund, and was previously an investment banker at Goldman Sachs.
