Most U.S. citizens planning short-term visits to France will soon experience new border procedures as the European Union implements its Entry/Exit System (EES). The EES, which is being introduced in stages, will require travelers from outside the EU—including Americans—to provide biometric data such as fingerprints and facial images at entry and exit points.

Starting October 12, 2025, these requirements will apply to most U.S. visitors arriving in France for brief stays. The rollout of EES across EU member states is expected to continue over a six-month period.

The U.S. Embassy in Paris has advised American travelers and residents in France to register for safety and security alerts through the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). According to the embassy: "We encourage all U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in France to sign up at step.state.gov to receive safety and security alerts from the U.S. embassy or consulate for your destination."

For more information about travel requirements related to EES, individuals can consult both the European Union’s official website and resources provided by the French Ministry of the Interior. Additional travel advice specific to France is available on the State Department’s website at https://travel.state.gov/en/international-travel/travel-advisories/france.html.

The embassy also reminds travelers that on September 16, 2024, a new version of STEP was launched by the Department of State, stating: "On September 16, 2024, the Department of State launched a new version of the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). To continue receiving alerts, re-enroll at STEP (state.gov)."
