A large protest is expected to take place in Amsterdam on October 5, organized by civil society groups in response to the Dutch government’s actions regarding events in Gaza. The demonstration will begin at Museumplein at 1:00pm, with a march planned through the Oud-Zuid neighborhood and returning to Museumplein. Authorities estimate that up to 200,000 people may participate.
The event is likely to cause significant disruptions in the Museumplein area and surrounding neighborhoods, as well as affect public transportation throughout central Amsterdam.
The U.S. Consulate General in Amsterdam has advised American citizens to avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place and to exercise caution near large gatherings or crowds. The consulate noted that “any gathering – even those intended to be peaceful – could escalate and become violent, as has been the case with some past protests.”
U.S. citizens are encouraged to remain aware of their surroundings, keep a low profile, monitor local media for updates, and follow instructions from Dutch police. In case of emergency or if facing a threatening situation, individuals should call 112 for immediate assistance.
