Meta has announced the introduction of communities on Threads, its social platform. The new feature is designed to provide public spaces where users can join conversations about shared interests, such as basketball and television.
According to Meta, communities are currently being tested across more than 100 popular topics on Threads. These communities expand on existing features like custom feeds and topic tags to help users connect with others who have similar interests.
The company stated, "As Threads has grown, we’ve seen people come together to develop and share their passions and expertise. With communities, it’s now even easier to find and connect with your people — and stay up-to-date on conversations you care about."
Communities are available for active interest groups including NBA/WNBA Threads, TV Threads, and KPop Threads. Membership in these groups is public; when a user joins a community, it will be pinned in their feeds menu and tagged on their profile.
Each community also features a custom Like emoji that reflects its theme—for example, Book Threads uses a stack of books—intended to foster a sense of belonging among members.
Users can discover new communities by searching by name or tapping a community tag within posts in their feed. A three-dot icon next to a topic tag indicates that there is an associated community. While not every interest has a dedicated group yet, over 100 communities are already available.
Looking ahead, Meta plans to introduce special badges for standout contributors within communities. The company explained that these badges will recognize some of the most active users who have helped establish discussion spaces around popular topics. Additional updates will include improvements to post ranking within both individual communities and the For You feed so that relevant content appears first.
Meta indicated that more features are planned to enhance user connections around shared topics in the future.
