A transportation strike is scheduled for October 2, 2025, in Lima and Callao. The action has been called by transportation unions to protest extortion and violence against public transportation drivers. The strike is expected to impact buses, minibuses, taxis, and moto taxis.

The U.S. Embassy in Lima has issued a demonstration alert warning that the strike may lead to large gatherings or marches in central Lima, especially around Plaza San Martín, Paseo De Los Héroes Navales, Congress, the Presidential Palace, and along main avenues. Additional demonstrations could occur elsewhere in Lima or other parts of Peru with little notice.

U.S. citizens are advised to avoid areas where demonstrations are planned or commonly take place. The embassy stated: "Expect heavy traffic conditions and a heightened security presence. Demonstrations can escalate into violence. Please monitor local media and Peruvian government sources for information."

The embassy recommends several precautions: "Avoid the crowds and demonstrations. Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests. Exercise vigilance when using public transportation. Follow instructions from the Peruvian National Police, Peruvian Armed Forces, and local authorities. Monitor local media for updates."

On September 16, 2024, the Department of State launched an updated version of its Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). U.S. citizens wishing to continue receiving alerts should re-enroll at step.state.gov.
