On September 30, Honduras’s Ministry of Emergency Assistance (COPECO) issued a Yellow Alert for several regions in the country due to an increased risk of flooding and mudslides. The alert covers the Departments of La Paz, Intibucá, Lempira, and Ocotopeque. It also includes municipalities near the Ulúa River such as Pimienta, Villanueva, Potrerillos, and San Manuel in Cortés; El Progreso, Santa Rita, and El Negrito in Yoro; El Ramal del Tigre in Tela, Atlántida; and Alianza in Valle.
Residents are advised to avoid steep slopes and waterways because of the risk of mudslides and flooding. Authorities have recommended several safety measures: “Avoid waterways, including swollen rivers and streams. Avoid traveling to flooded areas and exercise caution on the roads. Do not sail in small- and medium-sized vessels along the Caribbean coast. Seek secure shelter. Have travel documents up to date and easily accessible. Prepare an emergency supply kit (Ready.gov). Notify friends and family of your safety.”
