On September 29, 2025, the U.S. Embassy in Montevideo issued a security alert regarding potential disturbances related to the anniversary of Club Atletico Peñarol’s founding. The embassy noted that from late Saturday, September 27, through early Sunday, September 28, fans are expected to gather at Palacio Peñarol and in various neighborhoods across Montevideo and Uruguay to celebrate by launching fireworks.

The embassy warned that similar gatherings in previous years have sometimes led to public disturbances and violence between rival football clubs. U.S. citizens are advised to avoid areas where these gatherings take place and remain aware of their surroundings.

The alert provided specific guidance: "Avoid areas where the gatherings are taking place. Be aware of your surroundings. Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests. Monitor local media for updates. Keep a low profile."

For assistance, the embassy listed its contact information at Lauro Müller 1776 in Montevideo and provided emergency phone numbers for U.S. citizens as well as links to additional resources on its website (https://uy.usembassy.gov/) and American Citizen Services page (https://qrco.de/MontevideoACS). The State Department’s Consular Affairs office can also be reached at 888-407-4747 or 202-501-4444.

U.S. citizens traveling or residing in Uruguay are encouraged to review country information and enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program for ongoing security updates.
