Meta has expanded its dedicated Teen Accounts feature in Indonesia, aiming to enhance online safety for young users. The company introduced Instagram Teen Accounts earlier this year, offering built-in safeguards that restrict who can contact teens and what content they see. Teens under 16 are automatically placed into these accounts, and parental or guardian approval is required to adjust the default settings to less strict options.

According to a recent survey conducted by Ipsos on behalf of Meta, Indonesian parents and guardians show strong support for these measures. "91% of parents and guardians surveyed support social media companies creating special accounts for teenagers with additional protections, and 92% view Instagram Teen Accounts as helpful for parents," the research found. Additionally, "87% of parents and guardians surveyed say Instagram Teen Accounts make them more confident with their teen using Instagram." More than 90% said each default protection provided by Instagram Teen Accounts would be helpful in supporting their teen on the platform.

Meta stated it is expanding the Teen Accounts experience beyond Instagram to include Facebook and Messenger in Indonesia. These platforms will implement similar safeguards, such as automatic protections against inappropriate or unwanted contact and features designed to help teens manage their time online.

The company emphasized the importance of balancing online safety with opportunities for connection, learning, and entertainment. It noted that limiting access for those under 16 could reduce valuable experiences but believes that dedicated teen safety accounts provide a solution that addresses family concerns while allowing safe engagement with social media.

"Meta remains dedicated to working with families and communities to create a safe online environment for teens. By putting these protective measures in place, we aim to support families and enhance the overall online experience for young users in Indonesia," the company said.

The Ipsos survey included responses from 1,001 Indonesian adults who are parents or guardians of at least one child aged 13-17.
