The Ministry of State Secretariat of Indonesia and the Regional English Language Office (RELO) of the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta have completed a program designed to improve English language and cross-cultural communication skills for Indonesian protocol officers. The “English for Professional Communication Skills for Protocol Officers” initiative concluded on September 26, following seven weeks of needs analysis and two weeks of intensive training.
The program was tailored to address the specific challenges faced by protocol officers who work with high-level officials such as the President, Vice President, and Ministers. Dr. Patricia J. Szasz, an experienced language educator, led the initial needs assessment remotely from the United States before conducting in-person workshops at PPKASN, SETNEG Training Center in Jakarta from September 15 to 26.
Participants took part in sessions focused on oral communication, public speaking, event coordination, and cross-cultural understanding. Activities included role-playing and simulations that allowed officers to practice their skills in scenarios similar to those they may encounter professionally.
“Programs like this show the power of collaboration. By enhancing the English and communication skills of Indonesian protocol officers, we’re supporting their professional growth and strengthening ties between our countries,” said Regional English Language Director Kevin McCaughey.
“This program marks an important milestone in the cooperation between the Ministry of State Secretariat and RELO, while also reflecting the commitment to preparing protocol officers to perform their duties with greater professionalism in international settings,” said Noviyanti, Head Bureau for International Technical Cooperation at the Ministry of State Secretariat. “We look forward to continuing similar capacity-building programs with RELO in the future.”
Dr. Szasz commented on participant engagement: “I’m so happy that the whole group was willing to jump in and interact with each other and engage in the activities. They’ve taken a lot of risks and supported each other and created a fun safe and productive learning environment. I’m really grateful to them all.”
A participant shared their experience: “I feel better prepared to use English in informal and formal situations, and this is an important first step toward taking my skills to a higher level.”
The initiative is part of ongoing efforts by both organizations to support human resource development through international partnerships, helping Indonesia prepare its workforce for global challenges.
