Law enforcement officials from Laos, Thailand, and the United States participated in a trilateral information exchange in Nong Khai, Thailand, from September 23-24, 2025. The event was coordinated by the U.S. Embassy Vientiane in partnership with the U.S. Embassy Bangkok.

The meeting included about 30 immigration police leaders—15 each from Laos and Thailand—as well as representatives from the Regional Security Office at the U.S. Embassy in Vientiane, the Office of Overseas Criminal Investigations units from both embassies, and regional offices of Homeland Security Investigations and U.S. Customs and Border Protection based at the U.S. Embassy Bangkok.

Discussions focused on improving law enforcement collaboration to address transnational crimes such as human trafficking, child exploitation, narcotics trafficking, weapons smuggling, and cyberscam activities. Participants also exchanged information aimed at streamlining communication and consolidating efforts to enhance border security.

According to participants, "All countries agreed on the importance of such regional cooperation to stop criminals whose predatory enterprises do not respect laws or borders." The event is part of ongoing initiatives by the U.S. State Department to support similar efforts throughout ASEAN.

Enhanced cross-border cooperation among ASEAN member states will be a key topic at next month’s ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur.

"This cooperative law enforcement approach is one of the many initiatives the U.S. State Department is undertaking to support similar efforts throughout ASEAN," according to officials involved in the exchange.
