Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau met with Republic of Korea Foreign Minister Cho Hyun during the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week in New York City. According to Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott, the meeting focused on reaffirming the strength of the U.S.-ROK Alliance and advancing a forward-looking agenda for both countries.
Both officials acknowledged the positive results of the September 22 U.S.-Japan-ROK trilateral meeting. They discussed ongoing efforts to promote peace, security, and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula and throughout the Indo-Pacific region. The two countries reiterated their shared commitment to achieving complete denuclearization of North Korea.
Deputy Secretary Landau highlighted the importance of Korean investment in supporting American reindustrialization and contributing to mutual economic growth. He referenced investments announced alongside the August 25 U.S.-ROK Presidential summit as examples of this cooperation.
The meeting also included an agreement to establish a bilateral working group designed to facilitate travel and investment between the two nations. Both sides expressed support for achieving significant outcomes as South Korea concludes its APEC host year, particularly during APEC Economic Leaders’ Week in Gyeongju.
