U.S. artificial intelligence advisor Maxwell Scott is set to visit Australia later this month, with stops planned in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, and Canberra. The two-week trip is supported by the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Australia and aims to strengthen international cooperation on emerging technologies while emphasizing the United States’ role in AI and robotics.

Scott’s main engagement during his visit will be delivering a keynote at the Indo-Pacific Robotics and Automation Conference in Perth on October 7 and 8. His presentation will address responsible development and deployment of AI in high-risk scenarios, innovation in the global south, and the importance of cross-border collaboration for shaping future technological standards.

Maxwell Scott has significant experience in AI ethics. He co-founded Strat Alliance Global, an AI systems integration firm, and previously led teams at Microsoft’s office of Responsible AI working on sensitive technology deployments. Scott also served as a U.S. diplomat, co-chaired the UNESCO Business Council for the Ethics of AI, and contributed to setting international norms on responsible AI through work with organizations such as the European Union, ASEAN, and G20.

Jared Caplan, U.S. Embassy Counsellor for Public Affairs, welcomed Scott’s visit: “Maxwell Scott’s expertise and vision for the future of AI will provide Australians with a unique opportunity to engage with cutting-edge developments in this critical field,” Caplan said.

“This visit underscores the United States’ commitment to innovation and collaboration with Australia and our Indo-Pacific neighbors to address shared challenges and opportunities.”

Scott expressed enthusiasm about his upcoming engagements: “Australia is a key strategic ally and innovative leader in AI and robotics. I’m thrilled to engage with the vibrant Australian tech community to exchange insights and deepen our collaboration in shaping the future, both in the Indo-Pacific and beyond,” he said.

“If we hope to realize the full potential of AI, we must be deliberate in our effort to bring more voices and perspectives into the dialogue. Australia with its rich history of regional leadership on technology and innovation, is the perfect partner for ensuring the benefits of this technology are shared widely.”

Scott is also affiliated with Stimson Center’s Alfred Lee Loomis Innovation Council. He holds degrees from Arizona State University and the London School of Economics.
