The U.S. Embassy in Lilongwe has advised American citizens to exercise increased caution due to ongoing protests in the Old Town area of the city. According to reports received by the Embassy, there is a police presence and tear gas has been used.

Protests are not limited to Old Town and may occur elsewhere in Lilongwe. The Embassy notes that demonstrations, even when peaceful, can become violent or spread quickly. Security forces have previously used tear gas to disperse crowds.

Historically, demonstrations in Lilongwe have taken place along major roads such as Presidential Way, M-1, and Kenyatta Drive, and at prominent landmarks including the Parliament Building, Memorial Tower, District Commissioner’s Office, and Town Hall. However, gatherings could happen at any location.

The Embassy recommends that U.S. citizens remain alert and prepared for possible disruptions. "Have emergency plan in place. Ensure you have enough food, water, medicine and other supplies in case of traffic or roadblocks, supply chain disruption, or other election-related impacts. Monitor local media for updates. Minimize unnecessary movements. Avoid demonstrations and crowds. Exercise caution and move to a safe location if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests. Be aware of your surroundings. Keep a low profile," the Embassy stated.

For assistance during business hours, citizens can contact the U.S. Embassy Lilongwe at +(265) (0)88 477 3166 or use the after-hours emergency line at +(265) (0)88 296 0178. Additional information is available on the U.S. Embassy Malawi website.
