WhatsApp has announced the introduction of message translations, a new feature aimed at helping users communicate across different languages. The update allows users to long-press any message and tap "Translate" to convert it into another language. Users can select the source and target languages, with the option to download them for future use.

The translation feature is available in one-on-one chats, group conversations, and Channel updates. Android users have an additional option to enable automatic translation for entire chat threads, ensuring that all incoming messages are translated as they arrive.

WhatsApp emphasized privacy in the design of this feature. "Message translations were designed to protect the privacy of your chats. That’s why translations occur on your device where WhatsApp cannot see them," the company stated.

The rollout of message translations will begin today for both Android and iPhone users. Initially, Android users will be able to access translations in six languages: English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic. The iPhone version will launch with support for over 19 languages.

"We hope this feature helps break down language barriers and allows users to connect more deeply," WhatsApp said in its announcement.
