The European Union is introducing a new Entry/Exit System (EES) that will affect most foreign visitors, including U.S. citizens traveling to Luxembourg and other participating countries. Starting October 12, 2025, travelers should expect their biometric data, such as fingerprints and facial images, to be digitally collected at border crossings upon arrival and departure.

The EES is being implemented gradually over six months across Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia (Czech Republic), Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Cyprus and Ireland are not part of the EES despite being EU member states.

More details about the EES can be found on the European Union’s website at https://travel-europe.europa.eu/en/ees.

U.S. citizens who plan to travel to or reside in Luxembourg are encouraged by the U.S. Embassy in Luxembourg to register for safety and security alerts through step.state.gov. The embassy also recommends checking travel.state.gov/destination for destination-specific information before traveling.
