The United States Embassy and the Municipality of Sarichioi in Tulcea County held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the completion of renovations and expansion at Sarichioi Primary School #2. The project was funded through the Department of Defense’s Overseas Humanitarian, Disaster, and Civic Aid (OHDACA) program.

Chargé d’Affaires Michael Dickerson attended the event alongside Mayor Vitali Finoghen, Vice-Mayor Florin Costache, and Tulcea County Council President Horia Teodorescu. The renovation project cost $480,000 and is intended to provide a modern and safe environment for students at the start of the new school year.

“This school is a strong and tangible example of our nations’ unshakeable friendship,” said Chargé Dickerson during his remarks. “Our NATO Alliance directly benefits the families and students of Sarichioi and communities throughout Romania. We are stronger together as NATO partners and allies.”

Addressing students and their families, Dickerson stated: “This is more than just a renovation; it’s an investment in the future of Sarichioi. By providing a modern and safe educational environment, we are empowering the next generation with the tools they need to succeed. A thriving school attracts and retains families, contributing to the vibrancy and growth of the community. It signals to young people that their home is committed to their future, encouraging them to contribute their talents to Sarichioi’s continued development.”

The U.S. Embassy’s Office of Defense Cooperation managed the renovation process beginning in 2021, involving significant collaboration between U.S. officials and Romanian partners. Dickerson thanked local authorities for their dedication to completing the project and highlighted community involvement.

The OHDACA program supports humanitarian projects focused on health, education, disaster relief, and civic aid in partner countries. Over 13 years, there have been 43 such projects across Romania totaling more than $10.5 million.
