Nigel Chalk has been named as the new Director of the International Monetary Fund’s Western Hemisphere Department, according to an announcement by IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva. Chalk will begin his tenure on October 27, 2025.

Chalk, who holds both UK and Irish citizenship, has spent nearly thirty years at the IMF. He is recognized for his deep institutional knowledge and strategic leadership. “Nigel’s deep experience, sound judgment, and steady hand have guided many of us through complex challenges,” said Georgieva. “I am delighted that he will now bring these qualities to the role of Director.”

Since 2014, Chalk has served as Deputy Director of the Western Hemisphere Department. In this position, he oversaw surveillance and lending operations for countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Ecuador, Jamaica, Mexico, and Suriname. He also acted as Mission Chief for the United States and led eleven consecutive Article IV consultations over four U.S. administrations.

Chalk’s background includes private sector experience at Barclays Bank in Singapore from 2012 to 2013 where he was Managing Director and Head of Non-Japan Asia Research. There he co-led global research efforts and provided insights into Asian markets for clients.

His academic credentials include a bachelor’s degree from the University of Liverpool; a master’s in economics from the London School of Economics; and both a Ph.D. and M.A. in economics from UCLA. He has taught at UCLA and Rutgers University and published research on fiscal policy, monetary policy, and financial reform.

“Nigel’s appointment reflects his exceptional record of service and leadership,” Ms. Georgieva added. “I am confident he will continue to elevate WHD’s work and strengthen the Fund’s engagement across the region.”
