Meta has announced the expansion of its Performance AI glasses line with the introduction of Oakley Meta Vanguard, a new product designed for high-intensity sports. The announcement was made by Mark Zuckerberg at Connect, highlighting the company's continued partnership with EssilorLuxottica in wearable technology.

Oakley Meta Vanguard is engineered for demanding athletic environments, featuring an action-ready camera, fitness app integrations, and immersive audio. The glasses use Oakley's Three-Point Fit system and come with three replaceable nose pads to ensure a secure fit. They are also optimized for use with cycling helmets and hats and have achieved an IP67 dust and water resistance rating.

The wraparound design incorporates Oakley PRIZM Lens technology to shield users from sun, wind, and dust. According to Meta, "The open-ear speakers are the most powerful speakers on our AI glasses yet — six decibels louder than Oakley Meta HSTN, so it’s perfect for running down a noisy road or biking in 30mph wind." A five-microphone array aims to reduce wind noise during calls or when using voice commands.

Battery life is up to nine hours for general use or six hours of continuous music playback. The included charging case can provide an additional 36 hours of charge. Quick charging allows users to reach 50% battery in 20 minutes.

Integration with Garmin devices allows athletes to receive real-time performance updates hands-free via Meta AI. Users can ask questions such as “Hey Meta, what’s my heartrate?” or “Hey Meta, how am I doing?” The device can also light up a status LED within the user’s peripheral vision for quick metric checks without breaking momentum.

A new autocapture feature developed with Garmin enables automatic video recording at key workout milestones or changes in heart rate, speed, or elevation. For Strava users, performance metrics can be graphically overlaid onto videos and photos captured by the glasses and shared directly within the Strava community through the Meta AI app. These overlays can also be posted on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp.

Activity summaries from connected apps such as Garmin Connect, Apple Health, or Health Connect by Android will be available in the Meta AI app after each workout session.

The device features a centered 12-megapixel camera capable of capturing video at up to 3K resolution with a wide-angle lens. Additional capture modes include Slow Motion, Hyperlapse, and adjustable video stabilization.

Oakley Meta Vanguard will launch on October 21 in several countries including the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, France, Italy, Spain, Austria, Belgium, Australia, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Switzerland and the Netherlands. Expansion into Mexico, India, Brazil, and United Arab Emirates is planned later this year. Pre-orders are available online at meta.com or oakley.com for $499 USD.
