Protests over changes to the bus contract serving the Machu Picchu route have continued, affecting travel in and around Ollantaytambo, Puente Ruinas, and Machu Picchu Pueblo/Aguas Calientes. Local organizations are leading these demonstrations, which have resulted in the suspension of commercial rail service between Ollantaytambo and Machu Picchu. Reports indicate that railway lines remain blocked by both protesters and rocks.
Peruvian authorities have been evacuating tourists from Machu Picchu Pueblo using available land and rail routes when possible. Tourists still stranded in Machu Picchu Pueblo are being asked by Peruvian tourism assistance authorities to complete a questionnaire to identify those needing evacuation help. Travelers remaining in the area are advised to contact local authorities or guides for information about departure options, which may require hiking for two to three hours combined with bus or other road transport.
The U.S. Embassy in Lima has warned travelers planning visits during this period that transportation, access to the site, and other services could be limited without notice. The embassy has also issued safety guidance: "Avoid large gatherings, demonstrations, and roadblocks. Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests. Contact your travel company for advice or assistance. Monitor local media for updates."
