The Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP) has raised the alert level for the Sabancaya volcano in Arequipa to "Level Orange" following increased volcanic activity. The alert, issued on September 13, 2025, comes after the observation of a 5-kilometer-high eruptive column and pyroclastic flows. According to IGP, this level indicates a significant rise in eruptive activity, with more seismic events, frequent explosions, and emissions of ash and ballistic projectiles expected.

Authorities have advised people to remain at least 12 kilometers away from the crater. They also warn that future eruptions could produce columns of ash over two kilometers high, potentially affecting districts in the Colca Valley and nearby areas through ash dispersion. An alert for ashfall has been issued specifically for Huambo, Huanca, and other neighboring towns.

Despite these warnings, local authorities are not currently evacuating residents. U.S. citizens are being urged to avoid the vicinity of Sabancaya volcano and follow all guidance from local government officials and emergency personnel.

Recommendations include: "Avoid the area. If exposed to ash, cover your nose, mouth, and eyes. Keep doors and windows closed. Monitor volcanic and other geophysical alerts from the IGP website and the National Volcano Center. Follow instructions given by local authorities and the appropriate scientific research centers of Peru, as listed above."

The Sabancaya volcano stands at 5,960 meters above sea level in Caylloma province, about 70 kilometers northeast of Arequipa.
