Protests by local organizations over changes to the bus service contract for the route to Machu Picchu have led to disruptions in rail traffic between Ollantaytambo and Machupicchu Pueblo. Demonstrators placed objects on the railway tracks, resulting in temporary interruptions of service. As a result, PeruRail has suspended all rail traffic along the Ollantaytambo – Machupicchu – Ollantaytambo route.

Demonstrations are expected to continue in Machu Picchu Pueblo. Authorities warn that both rail and road access to Machu Picchu may be disrupted without prior notice. Travelers with plans involving rail services are advised to contact their providers for information about rescheduling or reimbursement. Tourists should also consult guides or travel agencies about current conditions and consider adjusting their plans as needed.

The U.S. Embassy in Lima issued recommendations for travelers, stating: "Avoid large gatherings, demonstrations, and roadblocks. Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests. Contact your travel company for advice or assistance. Monitor local media for updates."

For further assistance, travelers can reach out to the U.S. Embassy in Lima or the U.S. Consular Agency in Cusco at the provided contact details.

On September 16, 2024, the Department of State introduced an updated version of its Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). The embassy advises those wishing to receive alerts to re-enroll at step.state.gov.
