The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced the full restoration of Hungary’s status in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). This follows actions taken by Hungary to address security vulnerabilities identified by U.S. authorities.

Restrictions on Hungarian citizens’ ability to travel under the VWP and use the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) have now been lifted. In 2021, DHS had revoked ESTAs for Hungarian passport holders born outside Hungary and denied new ESTA applications from this group. In August 2023, further limitations were imposed, reducing ESTA validity for Hungarians from two years to one year and restricting it to a single use.

With recent changes made by the Hungarian government at the request of the United States, these restrictions have ended. Hungarian citizens will be able to apply for an ESTA with a two-year validity period that allows multiple entries starting September 30, 2025.

“The United States and Hungary have a strong security partnership, and that commitment is reflected in the actions that Hungary has taken to meet the security standards of the Visa Waiver Program,” said Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin. “Like President Trump, Prime Minister Orbán is dedicated to keeping his borders secure and vetting who comes into his country. When nations secure their borders, they’re making the entire world a safer place – and they should be rewarded for doing so. Thanks to President Trump and Secretary Noem’s efforts, DHS is reinstituting integrity into our immigration system.”

According to DHS officials, only countries meeting high security standards are granted visa-free access through the VWP.
