The United States Embassy in Sri Lanka, together with the Sri Lankan Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Health, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on September 12 to mark the completion of renovations at the Akaragama Divisional Hospital. The event was attended by representatives from the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF), United States Air Force (USAF), hospital staff, and local community members.

The renovation project cost LKR 40.5 million (approximately USD $135,000) and involved joint planning and supervision by SLAF and USAF engineers. Improvements included upgrades to the hospital’s structure, roofing, electrical and plumbing systems, HVAC equipment, power generation, interior fixtures, and security systems. Both countries contributed to the project as part of ongoing military cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.

Akaragama Hospital serves over 45,000 patients annually, many from lower-income backgrounds. The facility now offers improved services through nine specialized clinics.

U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie Chung attended the ceremony and commented on the partnership: “The refurbishment of Akaragama Hospital shows how the United States and Sri Lanka can work side by side to deliver meaningful results for communities. By sharing resources and expertise, we have improved vital infrastructure while strengthening trust between our nations. What we build together today lays the foundation for tomorrow’s shared security. When our partners are secure, America is more secure.”
