Representatives from the Regional Federal Benefits Office will be in Guatemala City from September 22 to 24, 2025, to provide services related to U.S. Social Security benefits. The visit is organized by the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala and aims to assist beneficiaries or those with questions about their benefits.
The services will be offered at INGUAT (Instituto Guatemalteco de Turismo), located at 7a. Avenida 1-17, Zone 4, on the first floor. Hours of operation are from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm and from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm each day. No appointment is necessary for walk-in services, but visitors should expect possible wait times.
Applicants are required to bring original documents and a legible copy of all documents needed for each service. For those applying for Social Security benefits, both an original and a copy of the birth certificate and passport are needed. Applicants for auxiliary or survivor’s benefits should also provide a marriage certificate and/or spouse’s death certificate.
For Social Security Number card applications for children under age 12, applicants must present a copy of the valid U.S. passport along with either a Consular Report of Birth Abroad or an original U.S. birth certificate; if registered after age five, form SS-5FS must be completed, and the passport must be signed.
For applicants over age 12, similar documentation is required—valid U.S. passport and Consular Report of Birth Abroad or original U.S. birth certificate—and if registration occurred after age five, form SS-5FS must also be completed with a signed passport.
Proof of residence abroad is required for all years claimed outside the United States. Acceptable documents include school records indicating dates attended, vaccine records, medical records, identification documents or passports (either valid or expired), employer records, marriage certificates, divorce decrees, and children's birth certificates. An in-person interview with the applicant is mandatory.
Assistance can be accessed through the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala City via its website (https://gt.usembassy.gov/), email through the U.S. Citizens Services Navigator, or by contacting the State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs at numbers provided for both domestic and international calls. Additional information can be found on the Guatemala Country Information and Travel Advisory page as well as through enrollment in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for security updates.
