Siemens has announced a new partnership aimed at improving the speed and transparency of its environmental product declarations (EPDs). EPDs provide detailed information about a product’s environmental impact, including data on CO₂ emissions, energy use, resource consumption, and waste generation. These documents are becoming increasingly important as global sustainability regulations become stricter and more industries require such disclosures.
“This partnership allows Siemens to expand the consistent, reproducible and high-quality generation of verified EPDs”, said Eva Riesenhuber, Global Head of Sustainability at Siemens. “It is a proof-point how large-scale integration of industrial digitalization supports environmental compliance and shows our leadership position in scaling sustainability impact.”
Håkon Hauan, Managing Director at EPD-Global, commented on the collaboration: “By making environmental transparency scalable and efficient, Siemens is helping shape a more sustainable industrial future. We’re proud to support Siemens in setting a new benchmark for digitalized, high-quality EPD generation. This ensures that Siemens’ EPDs meet the highest standards of transparency and credibility.”
Currently, Siemens provides ISO-compliant self-declared EPDs for over half of its product portfolio. The company plans to increase this number by certifying its internal process for creating EPDs. This certification will allow Siemens to produce more independently verified EPDs efficiently as it works toward achieving full coverage across all products by 2030. While not every EPD requires third-party verification, the updated process will enable the company to scale up independently verified declarations.
The construction industry already mandates EPDs in some areas, but their importance is growing in other sectors as well due to evolving regulations worldwide. By expanding its verified EPD offerings, Siemens aims to help customers make better-informed purchasing decisions based on transparent environmental data.
