A large political rally organized by former President Peter Mutharika and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is set to take place at Chilimampunga Ground, Mtandire in Lilongwe on Saturday, August 30. The event was initially scheduled for Masintha Ground but has been relocated near Bingu National Stadium.
Authorities note that while the campaign period so far has remained mostly peaceful, political gatherings of this scale in Lilongwe have previously carried a higher risk of confrontation. The possibility of violence cannot be ruled out. Road congestion and disruptions are expected in areas surrounding the rally.
There is concern that demonstrations could escalate into violence and potentially spread to other parts of Lilongwe. Attendees and residents are advised to avoid crowds, as tear gas may be used if demonstrations need to be dispersed.
The U.S. Embassy in Lilongwe issued recommendations for those in the area: “Avoid the areas of the demonstration. Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests. Monitor local media for updates. Keep a low profile. Review your personal security plans.”
For assistance, individuals can contact the U.S. Embassy during business hours at +(265) (0)88 477 3166 or use the after-hours emergency line at +(265) (0)88 296 0178. Further information is available on the embassy’s website at https://mw.usembassy.gov.
