President Lazarus Chakwera and the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) are expected to hold a major rally at Chilimampunga Ground in Mtandire, Lilongwe, on Sunday, August 31. According to a security alert issued by the U.S. Embassy in Malawi, while the ongoing campaign period has remained mostly peaceful, large political events in the capital have previously seen heightened risks of confrontation.

The embassy stated that "while the campaign period to date has been largely peaceful, large political events in the capital have historically carried an elevated risk of confrontation, and the possibility of violence cannot be ruled out." It also warned that "the potential for violence or spontaneous clashes remains elevated. Road congestion and disruptions are highly likely to occur around the affected areas."

Officials noted that demonstrations could escalate into violence and potentially spread to other parts of Lilongwe. The embassy advised people to avoid crowds because tear gas might be used to disperse demonstrators.

The advisory provided several recommendations: "Avoid the areas of the demonstration. Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests. Monitor local media for updates. Keep a low profile. Review your personal security plans."
