U.S. congressional delegation visits Taiwan for talks on security and trade

A delegation of U.S. senators visited Taiwan from August 29 to 30, 2025, as part of a broader trip to the Indo-Pacific region. The group was led by Senator Roger Wicker, Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC), and SASC Senior Member Deb Fischer.

During their stay, the senators met with several senior Taiwanese officials. These included President Lai Ching-te, Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim, National Security Council Secretary-General Joseph Wu, Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu, Minister of National Defense Wellington Koo, and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Chen Ming-chi.

According to a statement about the visit: “In all these meetings, the delegation had the opportunity to exchange views with Taiwan counterparts on a wide range of issues of importance to both the United States and Taiwan, including U.S.-Taiwan relations, regional security, trade and investment, and other significant issues of mutual interest. Their visit underscored the United States’ commitment to its partnership with Taiwan and reaffirmed our shared commitment to strengthening a Free and Open Indo-Pacific.”

The visit highlights ongoing engagement between U.S. lawmakers and Taiwanese leaders on topics such as security cooperation and economic ties.
