Brian Greaney assumes duties as deputy chief at U.S. Embassy Ljubljana

Brian Greaney has started his role as Deputy Chief of Mission and Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. at the U.S. Embassy in Ljubljana as of August 2025. Greaney is a career member of the Foreign Service.

Prior to his arrival in Slovenia, Greaney served as Political Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Paris and spent several years working in Moscow. His previous Washington assignments include directing global crisis management training for U.S. embassies and consulates, serving as Deputy Director of the Office of Russian Affairs, and working as Senior Watch Officer in the State Department’s Operations Center.

Greaney’s overseas experience also includes posts at U.S. embassies in Tirana, Prague, and Bridgetown; at the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos; and with the U.S. Mission to NATO.

He holds a Bachelor of Civil Law from University College Dublin, a Master of Laws from the University of Melbourne, and a master’s degree from the Eisenhower School at National Defense University.

Greaney speaks French, Russian, Czech, and Irish with some fluency. His spouse Rebecca is a former member of the Senior Foreign Service. The couple has two children.
