Brian Greaney, a career member of the Foreign Service, has begun his assignment as Deputy Chief of Mission and Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. at the U.S. Embassy in Ljubljana as of August 2025.

Greaney’s most recent role was Political Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Paris, after several years working in Moscow. In Washington, he directed the global crisis management training program for U.S. embassies and consulates, served as Deputy Director of the Office of Russian Affairs, and worked as Senior Watch Officer in the State Department’s Operations Center.

His previous overseas assignments include posts at U.S. embassies in Tirana, Prague, and Bridgetown; at the U.S. Consulate General Lagos; and with the U.S. Mission to NATO.

Greaney holds a Bachelor of Civil Law degree from University College Dublin in Ireland, a Master of Laws from the University of Melbourne in Australia, and a master’s degree from the Eisenhower School at the National Defense University.

He has used some fluency in French, Russian, Czech, and Irish during his career.

His spouse Rebecca is a former member of the Senior Foreign Service. The couple has two children.
