Guarulhos International Airport has become the largest airport in South America to implement advanced security screening equipment at its international checkpoint. The upgrade is the result of a partnership between the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the Guarulhos International Airport, and Brazilian authorities including Brazil’s Civil Aviation Authority (ANAC) and the Civil Aviation Secretariat (SAC) of the Ministry of Ports and Airports.

The new equipment was provided through a memorandum of understanding signed in 2023 between TSA and GRU Airport, with coordination from the Brazilian government. Funding for the US$2 million donation came from the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Counterterrorism, with support from the Department of Justice, under oversight by ANAC and SAC.

The installation includes dual view x-rays, advanced imaging technology body scanners, explosive trace detection devices, as well as training for security screeners. According to officials, these enhancements are intended to improve aviation security and reduce risks for international travelers departing from Brazil’s busiest airport. The same type of equipment is used across 440 airports in the United States.

Guarulhos is now the second airport in South America to receive such an extensive donation for screening technology; Viracopos International Airport received similar equipment earlier this year. Authorities state that this project strengthens passenger safety and provides additional layers of protection for both people and goods moving through global air transport routes.

"This project aims to increase aviation security, mitigate risk, and reinforce passenger safety for international travelers embarking from Brazil’s largest airport," said a statement issued by partners involved in launching the new checkpoint operations.

The introduction of these technologies is expected to raise screening standards at Guarulhos International Airport and contribute to safer travel throughout the region.
