A strike by the Metal and Allied Industries Union (SIMA) is expected to affect major Portuguese airports from September 3, 2025, through January 2, 2026. The U.S. Embassy in Lisbon has informed American citizens that this labor action may disrupt travel plans and airport operations during the scheduled periods.

The announced strike days span several weeks and months. In September, actions are set for September 3–9, September 12–15, September 19–22, and September 26–29. October dates include October 3–6, October 10–13, October 17–20, October 24–27, and October 31 through November 3. For November, disruptions are planned on November 10, November 17, November 21–24, November 28 through December 1, and also November 5 through December 1. In December and early January, strikes will occur from December 5–8, December 12–15, and from December 19 through January 2.

Travelers using Portuguese airports during these times are advised to confirm their flight status with airlines before traveling. The embassy recommends allowing extra time at check-in and security checkpoints due to possible delays and being prepared for long lines or baggage issues.

U.S. citizens seeking assistance can contact American Citizens Services at the U.S. Embassy in Lisbon at +351-21-727-3300 or via email at conslisbon@state.gov. Additional information is available on the embassy’s website (https://pt.usembassy.gov/) as well as the U.S. Department of State’s Consular Affairs page for travel warnings and alerts.

The embassy encourages travelers to monitor local media for updates about the strike schedule and enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive security messages.
