The U.S. Embassy in Tunis has announced a job opportunity for part-time language instructors to teach French and the Tunisian dialect as part of its Post Language Program. The deadline for submitting offers is September 8, 2025, at 10 a.m.
According to the embassy, the position involves providing language instruction to small groups and individuals. Instruction will cover day-to-day conversations such as vocabulary and grammar used in shops, restaurants, hotels, and local vendors, as well as work-related topics relevant to internal embassy operations or external contacts. The program also includes excursions, immersion activities, intensive short-term courses, field trips, and other language support.
Instructors are expected to have experience working with adult learners at all levels and be able to develop course materials tailored for adults in non-academic settings. Instruction should focus on developing speaking, listening, and reading skills necessary for understanding media and face-to-face conversations. All lessons must include professional vocabulary relevant to each student’s field of interest.
The embassy stated that instructional standards should align with those used by institutions such as the Department of State’s Foreign Service Institute (FSI) or the Department of Defense’s Defense Language Institute (DLI). If required by job duties or requested by students, proficiency levels will be measured using the Foreign Service Institute Language Proficiency Test in coordination with the Post Language Officer.
Classes will take place at least once per week through the end of the fiscal year on September 30. Students will be grouped according to their proficiency level: beginner (FSI Level 0–1), intermediate (FSI Level 1+–2), or advanced (FSI Level 2+ and beyond). Each class session will have no more than five students; individual instruction is also permitted.
Administrative requirements include providing a class roster and schedule before classes begin, submitting weekly attendance records, and delivering monthly progress reports for each student. Instructors must supply all instructional materials—such as texts, exercises, handouts, tests, and audio-visual content—which may be coordinated with the Post Language Officer.
Progress tracking involves documenting each student’s performance every two weeks under each lesson module. Instructors are responsible for making training recommendations if remedial or supplementary support is needed and providing weekly counseling for students at risk of failing proficiency tests. Corrective actions are discussed biweekly with students who need improvement.
Regular communication with embassy officials is required. Instructors must attend monthly meetings with the Post Language Officer to review progress and address any issues.
Payment will be made monthly for completed classes from the previous month; excused absences following program procedures do not count toward payment.
Applicants must have a tax identification number or business license; basic fluency in English; a university degree in language arts or related fields; at least five years’ documented experience teaching adults in French or Arabic (including Tounsi); supervisor references; background check clearance; and be either Tunisian citizens or legal residents with valid work permits.
Applications—including a letter of interest in English and a current CV—must be submitted by email (tucontractsollic@state.gov), fax (71-962-144), or regular mail addressed to the General Services Office at Ambassade des USA in Tunis before the deadline.
Questions regarding this solicitation can be directed via return email. Applicants are also asked to comply with new NDAA regulations by reviewing an attached certification document.
