Robert Anderson has been appointed as the Deputy Chief of Mission at the United States Embassy in Banjul. He is a career member of the U.S. Foreign Service and brings experience in diplomacy and public engagement.
Before his current role, Anderson led public engagement efforts at the U.S. Consulate General in Mumbai, India, managing educational, cultural, and media programs across five Indian states. His previous assignments include serving as Public Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Yerevan, Armenia; Deputy Public Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy in The Hague, Netherlands; and Press Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan.
In Washington, D.C., Anderson served as Africa Policy Advisor in the Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs and as Senior Advisor in the Bureau of Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs’ Office of Policy, Planning, and Resources. He also held political, economic, and consular roles during overseas assignments at U.S. embassies in Uruguay and Nigeria.
Prior to joining the Foreign Service, Anderson was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Armenia supporting small business development and an AmeriCorps Volunteer in Oregon.
Anderson holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Oregon State University and a master’s degree in international development from the University of Denver. He speaks Dutch and Armenian fluently and is proficient in Spanish. He is married to another Foreign Service Officer; they have two children.
