The U.S. Embassy in Laos has issued a public service announcement for American citizens living in or traveling through the country regarding Tropical Storm Kajiki. The storm is forecast to make landfall in northern Lao provinces early on Tuesday, August 26, and its effects are expected to continue until Wednesday, August 27.
Heavy rainfall is anticipated across several provinces including Xieng Khouang, Xayaboury, Luang Prabang, Vientiane, Xaisomboun, Bokeo, Bolikhamxay, Khammouane, and Savannakhet. According to the Mekong River Commission, flash floods may occur in Xieng Khouang, Bolikhamxay, and Khammouane provinces. Authorities in Attapeau province have also issued a flood warning.
The embassy advises: "We urge you to:
Avoid any low-lying areas prone to flooding;
Monitor the news and stay abreast of developments;
Take precautions to safeguard yourselves, your families, and your residences;
Check your emergency kit to ensure you have needed medicines and other supplies;
Protect your important documents including your passport; and
Keep your family at home informed about your safety and welfare."
