The U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur has provided medical equipment to Sarawak’s Flying Doctor Services to help improve healthcare access in remote communities. The handover ceremony took place at the Layang-Layang Hangar, Kuching International Airport, with Chargé d’Affaires David “Chip” Gamble of the U.S. Embassy and Dr. Veronica Lugah, Director of Health Sarawak, officiating.
The equipment donation was organized by the U.S. Civil-Military Support Element in Malaysia (CMSE MYS), working with local suppliers and the Sarawak Health Department. The package included a portable ultrasound machine, mini oxygen concentrator, customized medical bag, digital transcutaneous bilirubinometer, portable power station, nebulizer, automated external defibrillator (AED), vital sign monitor for blood pressure and heart rate, digital weighing scale, thermoscan, and coldbox.
Chargé d’Affaires Gamble said: “The United States is proud to partner with Sarawak to improve healthcare access for remote communities. This donation reflects our deep commitment to supporting the well-being of Sarawakians and strengthening the long-standing ties between the United States and Malaysia.”
Sarawak’s Flying Doctor Services was established in 1973 under Malaysia’s Ministry of Health. It provides healthcare for rural areas that cannot be reached by road or river and transports patients across East Malaysia.
This contribution from the United States is part of ongoing efforts to support humanitarian assistance and health security in Malaysia. The latest donation marks the second phase of a RM250,000 medical equipment package delivered to both Sabah and Sarawak to help reinforce healthcare resilience in these states.
Earlier this year on May 29, a similar partnership saw the U.S. Civil-Military Support Team deliver essential medical equipment to Sabah’s Flying Doctor Service in Kota Kinabalu. That initiative also aimed at improving emergency response capabilities and expanding healthcare coverage for remote communities.
